Grass-Fed Beef & Organic Free-Range Chicken: Labels and Nutrition
A public, expanded version of a newsletter article.

Beef: grass-fed and grass-finished beef generally has more omega-3s and CLA and a somewhat leaner fat profile than grain-finished beef (Daley et al., Nutrition Journal 2010). Organic meat also showed higher omega-3 in a meta-analysis (Średnicka-Tober et al., BJN 2016). The differences are modest. Beef isn't a major omega-3 source compared with fish, and there's no proven health outcome from switching. What chicken labels mean:
- USDA Organic: organic feed (which means no GMO feed), no antibiotics, and year-round outdoor access (USDA AMS organic livestock).
- Free-range (USDA FSIS): only means the birds had access to the outdoors. No minimum time or space is required (FSIS label claims guidance).
- Pasture-raised: no USDA definition. Look for third-party standards such as Certified Humane's pasture-raised rule.
- Non-GMO Project Verified: a third-party label for non-GMO feed and ingredients (Non-GMO Project). It is not organic.
Beef labels: USDA AMS withdrew its "grass fed" marketing standard in January 2016. "Grass-fed" claims are now approved case by case by FSIS under its label-claims guidance. For a stricter standard, look for AGA Grassfed (American Grassfed Association: grass-fed and grass-finished, no antibiotics or hormones) or Certified Humane (AGA, Certified Humane). Buyer tips: "Grass-finished" or "100% grass-fed" means more than plain "grass-fed." Pair the claim with a third-party seal. Ask local farms how the animals are raised, and compare price per pound against what you want. Not medical or nutrition advice.
