Protests in Italy, France and Germany: What's Happening and Why (Oct 2026)
A public, expanded version of a newsletter article.
Large protests over the cost of living have spread across parts of Europe this month. Here is what reputable outlets have reported as of Oct 25, 2026. Crowd sizes are given as each side reported them, because official and organizer counts often differ.
France: a second weekend of mass marches
- What: nationwide marches on Saturday, Oct 24, over purchasing power, school funding and public services. It was the second weekend in a row (France 24).
- Scale: the Interior Ministry counted 410,000 marchers nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris. The organizing CGT union said about 800,000, including 250,000 in Paris. The week before, the ministry had counted 550,000 (France 24).
- Where: Paris and cities including Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes, Lille and Strasbourg. The marches were largely peaceful. Clashes broke out at the edges of several marches, and police used tear gas and water cannons (AP).
- Latest: the Interior Ministry reported 1,314 arrests and 53 officers injured on Oct 24, down from 2,628 arrests the week before. About 70,000 security forces were deployed. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the marches "went well." Critics called the crackdown an attack on the right to protest (France 24; France 24, French).
- Why now: France holds presidential elections in April and May 2027, and President Emmanuel Macron can't run again.
Italy: truckers' blockades, then city protests
- Truckers: from mid-October, hauliers blocked roads and motorways in the south over fuel prices. Retailers reported food shortages, and some plants paused production, including Stellantis sites. On Oct 22 the government added €106 million in tax credits to €434 million already offered, and roadblocks in Sicily and Calabria were lifted (Reuters via Internazionale; Reuters via Internazionale).
- City protests: on the weekend of Oct 17, protests over fuel, energy, rents and wages turned violent in parts of northern Italy, including Milan. On Oct 20, the cabinet approved sending 500 troops to Milan and tougher penalties for violent protest (Al Jazeera, with AFP and Reuters).
- Latest: on Oct 24, protests against war and living costs took place in major cities. Reuters reported clashes in Turin, Rome and Bologna, with Milan largely peaceful. Police detained one person allegedly linked to organizing the earlier "October 17 Movement" protests (Reuters via Internazionale).
Germany: youth protests planned for Oct 31
- What: the youth initiative "Gen Z regelt" has called demonstrations in 21 cities on Saturday, Oct 31, including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich. The themes are school cuts and austerity, the cost of living, social injustice, military conscription and climate change (DW).
- Stance: organizers say they are "against all violence." Police say they will protect the right to protest. A police union leader warned that extremists could try to hijack the events (DW).
- Scale: sign-up figures come from the organizers' own website, which listed nearly 34,000 registrations as of Oct 22, per DW. These aren't independent counts (DW Polish).
