Fall Finally Arrives: What a Real Cold Front Means for Florida
A public, expanded version of a newsletter article.
After a week that felt like summer, forecasters said a real fall-style cold front was on its way across Florida. This is a longer look at what two local outlets reported before the weekend of Oct. 17, 2026, and what it means for planning your days.
What forecasters said
Tampa's WFLA said a strong cold front would pass through on Saturday, Oct. 17, bringing clouds and showers, with winds picking up in the afternoon as cooler, drier air arrived. It expected temperatures to fall into the 60s Saturday night. Sunday highs were forecast to stay in the upper 70s, with gusty northeast winds of 30 to 35 mph. WFLA said the fall-like pattern should last most of the following week.
In Central Florida, ClickOrlando reported Sunday highs in the mid-70s to low 80s and gusts of 30 to 40 mph along the coast on Saturday.
Surf and boating
ClickOrlando also warned about dangerous surf, with breaking waves of 9 to 12 feet possible. Strong northeast wind and big waves are a reason for beachgoers and boaters to be careful and to follow local flag warnings and advisories.
Fall events to check
Florida Rambler and Orlando Weekly listed several seasonal events: Lantana's Oktoberfest (Oct. 9-11 and 16-18), the Cedar Key Seafood Festival (Oct. 17-18), Partin Ranch's pumpkin patch and corn maze in St. Cloud (through Nov. 1) and the Micanopy Fall Festival (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). Weather can change plans, so check each event's own page before you go.
